A Method for Designing Crease Patterns for Flat-Foldable Origami with Numerical Optimization

چکیده
Origami is the art and science of making various shapes by simply folding a sheet of paper. When origami is studied as a geometrical problem, it is often assumed that the origami is folded flat. This flat foldability is an important property when we consider applying the techniques of origami to increase the portability and storage space of industrial products. We propose a method to generate new crease patterns that are flat-foldable by using a computer with the algorithm of numerical optimization. In this paper, we describe the five steps of our method. Although the numerical optimization sometimes fails to converge and we have to go back to the first step, we can generate many flat-foldable crease patterns containing randomly placed vertices. Our method can generate patterns that can be used not only as new origami designs but also as problems for the origami puzzle “Fold Me Up”.

Origami Diagrams and 3D Animation from Flat-Foldable Crease Patterns Sequences
Origami is the art of folding paper. It is a simple way of constructing geometric shapes from a single sheet of paper without using any cuts. There are two usual forms to document an origami model; diagrams and crease patterns. Diagrams are the step-by-step sequences that can be found in traditional origami books while crease pattern is the pattern of creases left on the paper after folding an ...
متن کاملDetermine Distinct Shapes of Rigid Origami
Rigid origami is a class of origami whose entire surface remains rigid during folding except at crease lines. In this work, we explore the idea of determining distinct shapes that can be realized by a given crease pattern. Typically, crease pattern is designed with a single target shape in mind. However, as the advances in material science and robotics engineering enable the realization of self...
متن کاملRigidly foldable origami gadgets and tessellations
Rigidly foldable origami allows for motion where all deflection occurs at the crease lines and facilitates the application of origami in materials other than paper. In this paper, we use a recently discovered method for determining rigid foldability to identify existing flat-foldable rigidly foldable tessellations, which are also categorized. We introduce rigidly foldable origami gadgets which ...
متن کاملInteger programming models for flat origami
This paper describes an integer programming model for a special class of flat foldable origami and shows how to use it to test foldability of crease patterns, as well as to find folds that satisfy some given properties, for example color pattern requirements when duo paper is used. To represent a crease pattern within this model, all its crease lines must be segments of a square grid or 45-degr...
متن کاملOne-DOF Superimposed Rigid Origami with Multiple States
Origami-inspired engineering design is increasingly used in the development of self-folding structures. The majority of existing self-folding structures either use a bespoke crease pattern to form a single structure, or a universal crease pattern capable of forming numerous structures with multiple folding steps. This paper presents a new approach whereby multiple distinct, rigid-foldable creas...
